Simple Ways to Give Your Webpages a Professional Look

By Lindsey Morgan

Every professional website that's successful has one thing in common: good web design. When you have someone visit your website, what's the first thing they take notice of? Even before they read a word, they see how your site looks and if it is appealing. So if you want to make the right first impression and ensure that your visitors stay longer on your site, then it's important that you focus on getting the smallest design elements right on your website. The following article looks into what all factors that you need to keep in mind in order to get your site's design right.

Give your filenames, which are your webpages, names that actually inform people and bots about your pages. Doing this is mainly for Google, and while it will not necessarily have a huge impact on your rankings, it will help to some degree. But you do not want to use a secondary keyword in this instance; instead, make it the primary. Hyphens are the character to use when you are making your filenames. If you use no spaces and the words are next to each other the bots will not read them properly. This is a relatively small measure that may be useful for your visitors in addition to the search bots. If you want to see a simple design, just look at Google's homepage - the search engine you have seen a million times.

People don't like cluttered up websites that are downright confusing. You have to ensure that whatever you do, the design should be minimalistic in nature and there shouldn't be anything unnecessary. One of the main reasons as to why you should have a simple design is because people tend to leave sites quickly when they don't really look appealing. Even when you're using ads, ensure that it doesn't look crowded, because that would only work against you. Besides this, creating a professional site is all about keeping things simple, so why complicate it?

Any time you place graphics on your site, be sure to fill out the alt tag in the HTML. You really should think about people with disabilities such as those with vision problems. By filling out the alt tag with a primary or secondary keyword phrase, you will score a few points. This is just a little SEO thing that people do with them, and that may or may not apply to you. Write a quick little blurb that tells what is in the picture. So do not just do this for one or two graphics but all of them.

Over time your site design is going to get better and will be more effective as you learn and make things better. The thing is that you need to begin with basic web design elements so that your site won't lack anything. Web design doesn't have to be that complicated but people tend to make it that way. If you want people to respond well to your site and get as many sales as possible and build a really good brand, you need to focus first on building a good foundation.
