How Hazardous Will 2012 Turn Out for Web and Mobile Developers?

By Will Christian

It is time to stare into my Nostradamus electrified bowl of quicksilver to divine what the subsequent twelve months has in store for the magicians of software development. Like puzzles of quatrains quicksilver revealed to the master the way forward isn't always obvious.

Sliding Slowly to Market, Fenestration Octad (8) Will Make a Less Than Grand Entrance

As occurs occasionally, another Windows OS upgrade is to be on the horizon for 2012. How fast it graces workspaces with its presence is the question. The Microsoft trolls appear focused on keeping the world in darkness. Certainly, the authorities will ensure full arrival well before Black Fri.. If the winds are right perhaps, a taste will be on the table after the spring equinox. Alas, will anyone notice an arrival with undue fanfare?

For tough guy developers still with interest the significant aspects are Metro and WinRT. While such technologies show future paths developers shall take, will Microsoft pros be pleased with the reception Metro-styled programmes receive at market. I see a marketplace packed with Metro programs as the 8th rendering of Windows makes a debut. But of number to suffice is hard to divine.

Metro is a maze. The barest Metro interface could attract tablet fans. Is anyone asking for pills like this as yet? Concurrently, I see disappointment for fans of older technologies, the deskbound and portable units. Aren't these still the majority of MS OS users? Imagine the absence of enthusiasm app producers might have with a doubtful market. A roll of the dice for certain, I see. A genuine mess might evolve for developers and consumers should less than enough of both seem to carry the day.

The quicksilver shows a tempered response in the market. To be sure, the market will not endure another Vista catastrophe but heralds will barely be heard around the planet. Reaction to Ultrabooks might help but patrons already content may barely find it impressive.

So many Standards So Very Little Time

History may show Windows 8 a footnote to larger market-place trends moving Web standards actually open. With Metro, Adobe AIR, OS for mobile users, the cloud, HTML and more pervasive such standards are paramount. Call the coming four quarters the Year of Web Standardization.

Events may reduce the shine of HTML5, for the next crucial wave should be more mature technology useable by all. Could the near future hold archival for the hallowed HTML?

The stars for 2012 will be APIs and surrounding technologies so far unclear. What's clear is Local Storage acceptance beyond any the Gears of Google ever produced. We are expecting the surprise to be WebGL when realization sets to how much more than 3D it applies.

For users the search will be for new or modernized browsers. The scramble is on but one player is at the mark already. Chrome it is, matching new baselines as no other browser yet does. Though the standard user is no geek, performance is felt thru the keyboard. Many users already feel the vibration of speed with Chrome. I see the glossy browser it is coming into second place well ahead of any other browsers.
