Effective Versus Ineffective Websites

By Lize Monelt

Websites are often judged by their appearances, similar to the old saying about books being judged by their covers. Some websites that are fairly old looking are bring in money for the site owners and get traffic anyway. Ensure that you don't set yourself up to fail by going with a poorly designed website.

To truly be successful, a website needs to pair both an attractive look and a solid business model. Set your goals and determine whether or not your website is going be selling physical or digital products on the site. Are you going to be gathering sales leads to supplement an offline business?

Make sure you make efforts to engage those who visit your page, as much effort as you put into making your site look unique and attractive with engaging design features and content. Invest time each day to bringing new visitors to your pages, and you'll quickly find the most effective way to reach out to your potential clients.

Always assume someone has never been to your site. Make it easy for them to find what they need. Think like a new visitor, doing what you believe they would do, if they came to your site, looking for a product or service you offer. Not everyone remembers this simple thing. Your favorite colors may not be the best fit for your product. It is important whether the user is going to get turned off by a blue and pink site. Your end user should always be kept in mind. Set your key take away goals and constantly analyze if you are moving toward or away from that goal. There is no real reason to have a site, it's hard to understand and navigate.

Every website needs a well-defined purpose. Those who run websites who have a clear business plan can figure out what content is best, the most effective way to interact with potential customers, and many other things by using the plan and goals and comparing them to the actual current state of the company.
