Is building your own business website cost efficient?

By Peter Kelly

Ask yourself a couple of basic questions before we dive in. To begin with, what is your situation? Secondly, what is the purpose of your new website?

Creating a new website isn't the hardest thing in the universe. This isn't to say that web design is simple, creating a successful website normally takes a lot of knowledge and time but if you aren't aiming your sights too high then you could accomplish this without hiring a professional.

If you are a business owner or are intending to set up your own business then it may well be that you are the type of person that can pick up the skills required to make a basic website. The essential web design subjects that need to be studied are; HTML, CSS and design fundamentals. For technical type people, it is often extremely tempting to skip straight in without considering the design aspect of your site. How a website looks on the internet will present a direct impression of a business so making sure that time is spent considering design as well as function is very key. And so we come to our first question. Does your situation allow you to spend the time learning these new skills?

With the state of current economy you might have been unfortunate enough to lose your employment and be in the situation of deciding wether to re-join the rat-race and aim to find another job or to start up your own business. If this is your situation then you may have the time on your hands to learn the fundamentals, purchase some domain hosting and get started on your business site.

If, however, you already own your own business then I suspect that you might already be finding that you don't have adequate hours in the day and that you don't spend enough time with your family. If this fits your situation then the website that you create is probably not going to meet up to your current expectations.

You also ought to ask yourself what the website that you are hoping to create is for. Also have a think about where you fit in to your market and have a look at the websites owned by your direct competitors.

You may well not have any online competitors or you might be promoting fairly low cost services. If this suits your type of business then a very basic website is probably sufficient for your needs and it is realistic that you can achieve this by building your website yourself.

After looking at the websites belonging to your competitors you might feel that the level of their websites is beyond what you can accomplish and that presenting a basic website to your market may not gain you any new clients. If this is the case then it might make better business sense to get a professional web design company to create the type of website that you require to get that extra business.
