How to choose a Web Designer

By John Wright

So you want more new business, and you feel like the internet is the answer. You are about to build a new web site or upgrade an existing website with a Web Design company and you do not want to make the same mistakes you made last time.

Or that hundreds of other entrepreneurs are still making daily when it comes to choosing a Web Design company.

The most typical complaint that I hear from possible clients talking about their last web site experience is this:

- "I did not get the result that I thought That I was going to get".
- "I had a website built but then could not make any changes on it myself."
- "I couldn't locate the web design guy to get changes made for me."
- "It took an eternity to get changes made, and I just gave up."
- "Changing my site became awfully expensive "so I did not change it."
- "I did not get the support that I was expecting after the website was finished."
- "Our website is OK, but we get no traffic to it."
- "We do not make any sales on our website."
- "I could not understand what they were talking about."

And there are lots of more.

So if you're about to embark on building a new website, you ought to have some questions prepared to ask the Site Design company, and also have some idea of what you need to achieve with your internet site.

A good web site designer will be able to help you to clarify what you need in your internet site and what options are available to make it work well for you. Your internet site should be more than simply a pretty brochure website. Printing a brochure doesn't make sales. A website is the same. Just having one doesn't make sales.

So your internet site must also be a powerful marketing and business tool that you can use to generate activity in your business "whether that be enquiries, net sales, shop front visits or demonstrations, email registrations to build a database, and so on.

You would like to put as many of your business functions online on your internet site as you can, to alleviate the cost and time pressures on you and your business groups.

These functions might include appointment scheduling, events management, contacting your database and your social media contacts, answering customer questions about your services or product, etc.

And most vitally of all "you would like to be able to transact your sales online so that when you receive the order email, the money is already in the bank!

So with this data in hand, choosing a Web Design company should be an interviewing procedure rather like hiring any other team member for your team. You want to raise questions and the answers that you receive should induce faith that you will be getting the end results that you need. The answers should seem clever to you "do not be baffled by technical language B-S. If the advisor isn't chatting in a way that you can understand, then you're not off to a great start.

If you do not understand something, ask them to clarify it to you with the expectancy of a very simple explanation that's easily followed. And in talking with the web expert, you would hope that they come up with some design, product and promoting concepts you had not yet thought of.

So in summary, the Web Design company that you select should be in a position to deliver everything that you would like in your site, and support you in making smart marketing and business calls.
