How to Select the Right Web Design Company

By Lance Strong

Searching for the right web design for your company's website--regardless if you're a Fortune 500 business or not, a profit-oriented or non-profit institution--can take up a lot of time. Imagine going through thousands, if not hundreds, of design companies... so it pays to know what to look for in a web design company that will be best suited for your business.

Consider the following when making your decision:

1. The kind of web experience they have.

Know how long they've been in the business. Longevity is a factor to consider because it shows that they really know their stuff.

2. Do they have a portfolio that you can review?

The best part of that long experience is the array of websites they've designed for their clients. Ask for links to other sites they've created and see for yourself. Are you blown away by what you see? Do the sites showcase different styles that appeal to you?

3. References.

References are a great way to ensure they can not only get the job done but can do so on time and on budget. They will tell you whatever you want to hear, but previous customers can you from experience what to expect.

4. Price.

The most important step in pricing is to make sure the potential design company outline all of the prices associated with the work and puts it all in writing. Never enter into a deal unless all of the costs are well understood up front.

5. Experience in search engine optimization.

Most web designers do not know SEO. For this reason you may end up with a nice website that is not search engine friendly. If this happens you may need to do another website and pay extra for SEO.

6. Duration of work.

Make sure they give you a good timeline and they stick to it. Ask for guarantees for this as well.

7. After launch support.

"Post-launch" maintenance or web site maintenance is one of the services a reputable design firm has to offer its clients. If the design firm does not offer it to you or does not have one, you might consider looking for another company that offers it, especially if you don't have an in-house webmaster.

When picking out a web design firm, do your research first. Websites can prove to be pricey so you have to make an informed choice to get your money's worth.
