Using Web Design To Make More Sales

By Steven Harrison

Many people just think of web design as a practice that makes websites pretty or technically striking. This is the case, to some extent. However, one of the most important elements of an attractive page is to take visitors to the site deeper into the site so they can get what they want. For businesses, this also means more sales.

Everyone surfs the web in a different way, but some commonalities do exist. Most people, for instance, spend most of their time looking near the top of the page and then scan down for a few brief seconds. Thus, titles and headers are important elements when it comes to conveying what a website offers. These need to be expressive and clear. A frustrated reader will click away almost immediately.

For this reason, placing things on a page in a way that will aid visitors in finding what they want is of utmost importance. With so much information available online, it is easy for visitors to feel overwhelmed and miss what they are looking for. Customers who spend most of their time on the site trying to figure out how to use it will not appreciate the experience. Web designers know how to make sure this doesn't happen. Having test customers give reviews of the site can also give you an idea of how easy the site is to navigate.

Along the same lines, websites need an easy-to-read banner that identifies your company should leave no doubt as to what your company is and what you do. Also, a concise, straightforward menu is essential. This will allow customers to navigate directly to the information they want. Some people may want to visit a brick-and-mortar shop, while others may want to purchase directly or check on a shipment.

For companies that depend on ads, placement is often an obstacle. The goal should be to put them in places where people can access them without driving customers away from the website's core message. After all, the site exists to inform customers about the company and its offerings. Anything that pushes people away from that will result in lost opportunities.

In a similar way, overpowering colors or colors that are difficult to read can turn visitors away. While it is important to catch people's attention, business owners should also make sure that these colors don't drown out the content. The same thing goes for photos. For some businesses, no photos will be needed at all. However, for those that do require a visual element, designers can help make sure the photos communicate the proper message without consuming too much of the site.

Web design can happen in many ways. Some people decide to outsource the entire project. Many skilled designers can make beautiful, but functional sites, as long as the requirements are explained clearly. Larger businesses may already have employees that can do this for them. The true aim of all this, though, is to make the experience of visiting a website enjoyable, which will ultimately lead to more sales.
